I wanted to test my horse model in B+W with dramatic/hard lighting.
The base mesh is lowpoly, around 4k quads + normal map made in Mudbox.
The background is a mix of photos and 3D elements (water splashes).
Some postwork in Photoshop (layers compositing, contrast and enhancement).
I rendered it using Maya/Mentalray with the “3″ for geometry approximation.
The mane and the tail fur is made with Shave and a Haircut.
The original rendering is 2500×3500 and it took about 1 hour.
Here you can find an HD turntable of the horse base mesh: Running Turntable.
